Transmission Connections ‘pause’

On the 15th January 2025 Ofgem, the energy regulator for Great Britain, announced its support for a ‘pause’ in transmission-connected generation projects to enable an efficient move to a new connections process designed to focus on projects that are ready and needed to deliver clean power.

The move is primarily aimed at generators looking to connect to the transmission network, with demand applications (typically new residential and commercial development) unaffected.

This is a complex subject but if your project has a dependency on the GB Transmission Network then it may be affected by the pause taking effect from 29 January 2025. You can view the full Ofgem decision document here;

The Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s) are already issuing guidance regarding the announcement. Whilst this shouldn’t affect impact applications connecting to their distribution network its early days and there is always a danger of unintended consequences at such as early stage.
